For all its splendors and curiosities the one thing about New York City that everyone can agree on is that it is an expensive place. Whether you work, live, or visit there, you going to pay top dollar for just about everything. So when thinking about visiting New York City, you'll want to try to cut costs as much as possible. This article explores how the New York Pass can help you do that.
There are various attractions that you can go to and many of them are the standard ones that people often visit. Most of those popular attractions cost somewhere in the area of $20, give or take (children are a bit less). The Empire State Building costs $20. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Musuem costs $19.50. Granted, the Central Park Zoo costs $8.00 but the New York Skyride cost $35. So it will even itself out. $20 is a good frame of reference.
Now before you whip out your credit card to purchase a New York Pass, you have to beware of a couple of things. In order for the New York Pass to be worth the cost, you have to be prepared to visit a fair amount of attractions in a day. If you take that average of $20 per person per event then you will need to visit four attractions to make the pass worthwhile (the New York Pass costs $75 for a one day pass - you get more savings if you buy multi-day passes). Also, you may want to skip having any kind of extended lunch because it will eat into the time that you could be going to those attractions. There are plenty of places in the city where you can grab a quick bite, such as a deli or even a sidewalk cart. This is necessary because many of the places have set hours of around 8:00 AM or 9:00 AM in the morning to 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM in the evening.
The other factor to consider is the weather. There are some events on the New York Pass that are outdoors and may not be available due to inclement weather conditions. Further, some attractions, like Licoln Center tours are currently closed due to renovations. While others, may have certain restrictions that require you to call ahead (like the Statue of Liberty).
I recently picked up a New York Pass for my wife and I because friends of ours from college (she and I met in college and have the same friends) were planning a trip into the city and made that known via Facebook. We encouraged them to buy passes for their family and they did so. Aside from the minor restrictions stated earlier, I felt like the New York Pass was extremely worthwhile. We never had any trouble from participating vendors and there were several of the events where we were "fast tracked", i.e. didn't have to wait on line, due to the pass.
There are several things to do in New York City that do not require money and they are fun to do. The New York Pass will not help people that are looking for these no cost events. But many people gravitate towards the attractions that cost money and those are the people that will truly benefit from the New York Pass. So if you want to save money while in New York City, why not get a New York Pass for your city visit?
