What makes a dress vintage? What makes a dress classic? Is there a difference between the two? Many fashion designers have argued this hot button topic again and again over the past few years. It is time to set the record straight.
Vintage clothing is defined by the conglomeration of knowledge poured into Wikipedia as “a generic term for new or second hand garments originating from a previous era. The phrase is also used in connection with a retail outlet, e.g. "vintage clothing store." It can also be used as an adjective: "This dress is vintage."
Vintage clothing is normally no older than the 1920’s but is no newer than 1980. There is another sub category of vintage called retro. These cloths tend to have originated from the previous era, so for the current fashion world, that would be from 1981 to 1999. Vintage clothing can be relatively easy to find. Many senior citizens store their old clothing for many years, so raid your grandmother’s closet or attic with her permission, of course.
The term “classic” applies to items in your wardrobe that NEVER go out of style. These “classics” include the signature little black dress, a cashmere sweater, any kind of suit, or even accessories. Classic is more style than it is actual clothing. Classics have a reputation for being of higher quality and more upscale in appearance.
Vintage clothing and classic clothing can go hand in hand, but the fine line lies in the quality of the garment. If you walk into your mother’s closet, chances are that you will find three things, a suit, a button up blouse, and a straight skirt. If these items are from their high school days, then they would be classified as both vintage and classic.
Clothing that is considered vintage is somewhat different in appearance as well. The designs of these dresses tend to reflect a more old fashioned style that can be “classic” in appearance and yet may be somewhat shabby due to wear and age on the fabric itself. Choosing one or the other of these styles can both enhance and freshen your wardrobe, especially if you take the time to repair damages to older clothing.
