Every time we turn around, there's another weight-loss program out there that promises to make you drop 10 pounds in 48 hours. Low-carb, no carb, low fat, no fat, no meat, and on and on and on. However, there is no real magic to losing weight. Simply, to get and keep weight off, you have to ingest a sensible amount of calories (neither too many nor too few) and a balanced amount of carbohydrates, fat and protein so that you can get and keep weight off sensibly.
Simply, fad diets just don't work. They come and go precisely because they don't. However, they do pique dieters' interest because absolutely, they do usually make you drop a lot of weight very fast in the beginning, but because they're unbalanced, you gain it right back. Simply, you can't sustain what a fad diet wants to make you do. It's just not healthy. The only way, again, to getting and keeping weight off is to do so sensibly with a weight loss and maintenance program that keeps health as its first priority.
Now, you can construct your own healthy weight loss program, perhaps hiring a nutritionist to help you do so. Any sensible program is going to help you lose weight and keep it off, comfortably, without starving. However, if you don't have the time or inclination to construct your own program, it's not going to work, and pretty soon you're going to go back to old eating habits, only to keep packing on the pounds.
However, there's a weight-loss program out there that can help you, and it's not new. In fact, Jenny Craig has been quietly dominant in the weight loss industry for 25 years. This program works for so many people because its prepackaged meal program focuses on balanced nutrition; you supplement its prepackaged meals with low-fat dairy, fruits and vegetables. Because you don't have to measure portion sizes or cook, it's a no-brainer for us "junk food grabbers." You just grab one of your meals and go. That's probably one of the major reasons Jenny Craig is so successful. It gives you the convenience of junk food, but packaged within healthy meals that are preplanned and prepackaged so that you don't have to think.
Of course, this "grab and go" convenience can be a disadvantage, too, because I can hear you thinking, "Well, overweight and obese people get that way because they don't learn how to cook properly and learn proper portion sizes, not just because they don't learn how to eat properly." But the Jenny Craig weight-loss program addresses that, too, because the first part of the program (the "grab and go" part of the program) is relatively short-lived. The meals themselves are meant to serve as models to what healthy portion sizes and meal contents look like. During that same time, dieters also meet with counselors, with the ultimate goal of planning and cooking their own healthy meals with healthy portion sizes.
And if there are any disadvantages to this program, it's that it's relatively expensive. You're going to pay between $10 and $15 a day for the prepackaged meals, plus any extra expense for your own dairy and fresh fruits and vegetables. The other thing is, this program is not meant to be a permanent solution. It's just meant to get you started on healthy eating habits and give you the knowledge you need to continue with your own weight maintenance once you've reached your goal weight, with your own healthy cooking and portion control.
And even though $10-$15 a day (plus fruit, vegetables and dairy) sounds expensive, it's really not. Think about that for a minute. How much do you spend on food now? If it's in the ballpark of $600 a month, Jenny Craig plan is not going to cost you any more. (And even if it does, what you'll save over the long term, including health care expenses and the rescuing of your own health, it's probably certainly worth whatever extra you spend.)
So, what should you do? Jenny Craig is not meant to be a permanent solution; rather, it's meant to be a temporary tool that gets you started on weight loss and then teaches you how to take care of yourself through proper nutrition and portion control. You do this without depriving yourself, without going hungry, and without zooming up and down on the scale because you jump from one fad diet to the next. With 25 years of experience behind it, Jenny Craig is certainly a good program. But is it for you? Only you can really decide that.
