Do you like do do arts and crafts with your kids? Me too, but if you go to the art store you can easily have alot of money tied up in supplies. I have found that one of the best ways to overcome this is to use the 3 r's (reduce, reuse and recycle). I know this sounds funny but if you are creative you can reuse things around the house to make wonderful art projects. What I do is keep things that I think will be useful in an art project like aluminum foil or oatmeal containers. I have a plastic container that I store it in. It seems like I keep some things for a while but we always find something to use it on.

Another thing that I have found helps when your on a budget is to make some of your supplies. Some things that you can make are glue, fingerpaint and play dough. I like to make my own supplies because when you make your own you know what is in it. I know that allot of art supplies are non-toxic but my son has alot of allergies and I don't want him to get ahold of something he might be allergic to. Another great thing about making your own is that you can ask your kids to help make it and that's another thing you can do together.

You can also find ways to reuse some supplies you already have like crayons. You can take a muffin pan and put aluminum foil at the bottom to coat it. Then you take the paper off the broke crayons and put them in the muffin pans. Bake them in the oven until they melt. If you wan't to make fun shapes you can get different shaped cupcake pans. I have some Christmas tree shaped ones that I use. I have a little plastic box that I put all the broken crayons in. With a three year old it don't take long to fill the box.

One of the best things about using recycled things around the house is that you will teach your kids the best lesson of all and that's how to take care of our earth by recycling and keeping things out of our landfills. Once kids learn about it, they love to get involved and when they get to make wonderful things out of the things they recycle it will make recycling more rewarding for them.
