Have you ever found yourself in the middle of an uncontrollable panic attack? Panic that takes hold of you while driving is even more unnerving. This intimidating event may also pose a danger to you, as well as other drivers on the road with you. In order to ensure your safety and the safety of others, here are five tips to assist in diminishing panic while driving.

1. Turn on some calming music in the car.

Panic attacks tend to escalate based on the fact that your mind wants to focus on a negative sequence of events. Logic flies out the window during panic attacks, leaving gloom and despair in it's place. Calming music creates a soothing aura, allowing you to bring your mind back to a rational, sensible place.

2. Drive with a friend

It can be quite advantageous, as you are trying to get a handle on your panic while driving, to ask a friend to ride with you. Having the interaction and feedback of a companion will help you keep your mind in the realm of reason and avoid illogical thinking. If, by chance, you do begin to experience an attack of panic, your friend is there to provide assistance and encouragement, to help you get back on track.

3. Memorize a statement of affirmation that can be repeated continuously.

As soon as you feel that anxiety creeping into your mind, think of your affirmative statement and say it over and over to yourself. It is your feelings of insecurity and needless anxiety about unreasonable things, that allow panic to overtake you. Reassuring yourself with statements such as, "millions of people drive safely every day" or "driving the speed limit will eliminate the chance of a high-speed car accident", will be helpful in getting your mind back to a more positive place.

4. Automatic thought

Uncontrolled thought is a frightening prospect, but is a reality at certain times. In order to gain control of your automatic thought, you must educate about how this works. The apprehension that you feel while driving, is born of the negative automatic thoughts that your brain produces. It is possible to eliminate your panic while driving, by learning to influence and massage the negative thoughts, and create a more positive thought process.

5. Where does this anxiety come from? The most sure fire way to eradicate your panic while driving is to discover the origin of your extreme fright, and write down what is causing it. Are your feelings based on a single traumatic experience, or did your anxiety build gradually, as a result of witnessing auto accidents on TV or while on the road? When you have found the root of your panic attacks, you will better be able to decide on treatment and become a confident driver again.
