This weeks focus is on eye health and what can be done in order to maintain and extend your eye health through daily food and vitamin choices.
In an Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) sponsored by the National Eye Institute, the study concluded that in order to reduce the risk of developing advanced age-related macular degeneration, by about 25 percent, you should take high levels of antioxidants and zinc. The study used a specific amount of vitamin and mineral dosages every day with a portion of the closely followed 3,600 participants.
The dosages that were given to the participants and are recommended are those of the "AREDS Formulation":
* 500 milligrams of Vitamin C
* 400 International Units (IU) of Vitamin E
* 15 milligrams of Beta-Carotene (Also equivalent to 25,000 IU of Vitamin A)
* 80 milligrams of Zinc
* 2 milligrams of Copper as Cupric Oxide
Also according to the AREDS, to achieve the high levels of vitamins and minerals within the AREDS Formulation in nearly impossible through a healthy diet. The use of vitamin and mineral supplements is strongly recommended.
For another common eye disease, Cataracts, the AREDS Formulation seems as if it would be beneficial as well.
In efforts to slow the progression of Cataracts, it is recommended that you:
* Have a healthy diet full of Antioxidants. (Same Antioxidants that are found in the AREDS Formulation)
* Quit Smoking if you are a smoker.
* Make certain that glasses or contacts are the most accurate prescription for your eyes on a regular basis.
* Wear sunglasses when you are outdoors, especially in the sun or near reflective surfaces.
* Improve lighting in your home or office as to not strain your eyes.
Eye health is commonly over looked as a health concern until it becomes one. Begin to take care of yourself today!
