There are a number of foods to avoid that causes gout to appear. We are going to put these foods into separate categories as we try to discover how to get rid of the horrible affliction that is gout.

Gout is a form of arthritis that mainly appears in the big toe of middle aged men although it can appear in other joints such as the fingers, knee, wrist and elbows just to name a few. It can even affect women as well as men, although it is much more common in men. In this article we are going to take a look at a few of the causes of gout and we will talk about the foods to avoid that causes gout attacks or flare ups.

Red Meat

If you are trying to cure gout or simply trying to prevent gout attacks then you need to stay clear of all type of red meat. This type of food has a very high purine level in it which is a main culprit in gout attacks. Chicken is a great alternative but tofu would be even better. Red meat is one of the main foods to avoid that causes gout to appear.

Seafood

Again we are attacking a protein source but it is a fact that seafood is extremely high in purine and therefore it is also off the menu if you are trying to conquer gout.

Yeast

Yeast is in a lot of the things we eat and drink. Yeast is also known to cause gout to appear and therefore foods such as white bread and drinks such as alcoholic beer are off the menu for now.

As a contrast to what was previously said about protein, a diet that is high in dairy products such as milk and cheese will help you to get rid of the purine levels in your body and help you to combat gout. Dairy produce is moderately high in protein but it will work to your advantage.

Another excellent way to complement the foods to avoid that causes gout is to take upwards of 1g - 1.5g of vitamin C on a daily basis. In a recent 2009 study people who were commonly affected by gout were given 2 separate doses of vitamin C. The group of people taking in excess of 1.5g of vitamin C daily had a 40% less chance of getting gout. Take 1.5g of vitamin C daily when you have gout and 1g daily to maintain a barrier against further gout attacks.
